Jack MacManaman 48 Recap: ----- Well the 25th anniversary is in the books and based on turnout it was a resounding success. The weekend started with a practise round at Brookfield N.S. Six groups, including 4 brave women (Kim, Beth, Pam and Colleen) went out in hot, humid conditions. Adam and Peter were the only two golfers to walk and by the 14th hole they were mentally and physically exhausted. After the round, everyone high-tailed it back to Halifax for the barbeque and Greg and Kim’s. Living in the heart of ‘old Wedgewood’ a stone’s throw for the old Grosvenor Wentworth School was the ideal setting for the BBQ. Although the weather and mosquitoes didn’t cooperate – it was a great spread and Greg had multiple BBQ’s going as well as a kiddie pool full of ice and beer! Many people showed up at Greg’s. It was nice to have many of the wives and girlfriends attend and for the first time in years Steve Farmer, Adam Mulrooney and John Rubinger attended. Following some good dialogue, food and drinks – 12 to 16 of the guys headed for Jay’s turf – Dooley’s in Rockingham Ridge. Peter was able to control the Juke Box for an hour and a half and Jay won most of his games on the four reserved tables. Mark proving to be quite wise chose Jay as a partner before anyone else had a chance and the pair of them went on to win the doubles competition – mostly due to Jay. A shot of tequila put a cap on a great day at 1:00am. At this point Malcolm, Rick D, and Peter decided they just had to have a super donair before walking down Dunbrack and going home to sleep. The championship round was held on Saturday at Glen Arbour . It started quite overcast but warm. To Peter’s amazement almost all the competitors showed up well in advance of the tee times like he requested. As competitors loosened up on the range and putting green, Peter went in to square up the balance. To his surprise he was asked to cover the remaining balance on his own card for $3230.00. After a little sweating the transaction went through and it was time to get ready. Ian Paton brought along the shirts he ordered and it made most of the guys actually look quite presentable and professional. 29 of the 30 golfers showed up with only Rob Grant MIA. After a brief discussion with Jay and Braum it was determined there was a misinformation about Rob’s intent to play. Groupings were put together and at 12:09pm Peter sliced the first shot of day into the woods to many catcalls from the gathered gallery. Alex Lawrence, Ken Gardiner and Alan Forsyth joined previously mentioned long time absentees to give us our biggest field ever. Additionally, 5 seniors – Wendall Kerr, Jack Macmanaman, Larry Buckler, Graham Jackson and Phil Henderson (all over 60) played in their first tourney ever. The rains held off until mid way through the back nine. Some very good scores were posted despite overall poor-putting. In his first tournament ever Graham Jackson – one of the oldest competitors shot a blistering 82 with only 29 putts to win the Low Gross by two strokes over Greg Eisnor. Perennial favourite Mark Henderson was only 3 strokes back. Rob Power won his second low net in a row by two strokes with a 77 over Braum, Malcolm and Graham. At the other end of the spectrum Wendall, John and Adam struggled compared to their handicaps. In the team event: Graham continued with his trophy haul as he and first time team winner Jason Richards won the prestigious team event. With a combined handicap score of 180 they edged Rob Power and another senior Larry Buckler by three strokes. I mentioned the poor putting as the overall average was 36 putts – only one golfer had fewer than 30 and 5 had more than 40. Jack Macmanaman may have set a new record in putting futility with 48 putts. His overall score may have broken 100 with some better putting! After the skies opened up most competitors hung around the clubhouse for a frosty beverage. The Masthead News sent their reporter ‘Keith’ to get the inside scoop on our tournament. After being enlightened on our history, Keith took a photo of Peter, Steve K, Alan and James to accompany the article. Competitors then rushed for a bite to eat and a quick shower. Everyone reconvened at the Henderson ’s where a frazzled Peter tried to determine the winners and new teams with Rob G. not participating. Finally as people suffered through high humidity the trophy presentations and prizes were given out. As an interesting side note – each Jackson winner elected to choose an alcohol. Graham took a box of rum mickeys. Shane took 24 beer and Colleen elected to take a bottle of vodka or wine. Prizes were appreciated as most guys donated some nice things. Besides the liquor there were nice golf shirts (to Ian’s chagrin), a golf bag, hats, towels, golf balls etc. Finally, around 8:30pm Peter panicked and explained people had to get out of the house and up to the firehall for the party. Scrambling to finish their drinks most people made it to party by 9:00pm. Sadly, the event stayed at just the golf level as no one from a Grosvenor Wentworth reunion perspective showed up. However, the 40 or so people that went seemed to have a good time. Ken Gardiner was just glad we showed up as he was the only one there from 8:00pm until we all arrived. In addition to the golfers and their spouses – Steve Murphy showed up to say hi. The bar staff were amazed how well they did on tips and sales for 40 people. This despite the fact, that Chuckie (name changed to protect the not-so-innocent) was giving away contraband liquor from the back of his car in the parking lot. Around 10:15-10:30pm some folks finally started dancing. Nelly’s ‘It’s getting Hot in Here’ got folks up on the dance floor. Beth Kerr commented “it was great we got a DJ for the Henderson brothers” as Peter Mark and Jay took few breaks from the dance floor. At times it looked like everyone had gone home but for the most part they were outside having cigars and enjoying ‘Chuckie’s Liquor Emporium’. At 1:00am the DJ spun his last song ‘Lost together’ by Blue Rodeo and most of the couples ended the night with a waltz. All in all, it was a very different approach this year to the gatherings as we were more inclusive of spouses. By all accounts everyone seemed to enjoy the weekend but it remains to be seen if this approach becomes an annual tradition. Already competitors can dream of next year’s tourney at Crow Bush Cove and the possibility of having the game of their life to win trophies and prizes. In the end the most fantastic thing about this year’s tournament was the fact that so many of the original crowd returned to make it a memorable event. Special thanks to Greg S, Shane and Ian P for being on the organizing committee and making it a tremendously successful event. I hope we get a similar turnout next year in PEI. Respectfully yours, Peter Henderson 25th WGC Committee Chair
